Calgary, AB — December 1, 2024
Canada’s Dylan Deschamps continued his strong start to the 2024/25 season World Cup season, earning a bronze medal in the Big Air event at the Beijing Snow Sports Center on Sunday. Competing in the best two-of-three jump format, he opened with a strong first jump but faltered on his second, putting the pressure on him to deliver in his final attempt. Rising to the occasion, Deschamps secured a combined score of 181 points, finishing Tormod Frostad (NOR) and Miro Tabanelli (ITA).
The result further solidifies the 23-year-old’s impressive start to the season. Following his previous third-place finish at Big Air Chur in October. With two strong results early in the Olympic Games qualifying period, Deschamps has positioning himself as a strong contender for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Livigno, Italy.
“It was pretty crazy I was able to land my jump,” Deschamps said after the event. “It was so much fun, especially with the slush landing — that was really fun. Based on my two starts in the Olympic qualifiers, it feels like I will be going to the Olympics.”
The 2026 nomination process is a tiered qualification process that calculates athletes’ top results between July 1, 2024, through January 18, 2026. Athletes from Slopestyle and Big Air compete for limited Olympic spots against skiers from Freestyle Canada’s other disciplines — Aerials, Moguls/Dual Moguls, and Halfpipe — as well as Ski Cross athletes from Alpine Canada. Nomination priority is given to skiers who medal at targeted events, and those with two podium finishes in the 2025-26 season. With two early medals under his belt, Deschamps is in a strong position as he continues his Olympic journey.
Deschamps was one of four Canadians in action but the only to advance to the finals. Max Moffatt (14th), Aidan Mulvihill (24th) and Mark Hendrickson (39th) all finished outside the top 12 in the qualification round.
The Freestyle Canada Big Air team will now return to Canada for December, where they will train and enjoy a Christmas break at home before setting their sights on the next World Cup event in in Klagenfurt, Austria, scheduled for January 3-4, 2025,
