Valérie Gilbert is a natural-born skier, having been on skis since she was just two years old. Even before that, her mom Maryse would carry Valérie on her back when she went skiing.
Valerie started mogul skiing at the age of seven, but before that would experiment on bumps with her family for fun, even going as far as competing in dual moguls against Maryse. Her father, Alain, would accompany her to the snow park to practice jumps.
After her last year of high school, Valerie was named to the Canadian team after an excellent 2014-2015 season that saw her claim the Canada Cup, as well as a bronze medal in dual moguls at the Canadian Mogul Championships.
