Lewis Irving Claims Silver on Home Soil at Lac-Beauport World Cup

Calgary, AB – The energy was electric in Lac-Beauport, QC, as Freestyle Canada, with the unwavering support of the local community, hosted the first World Cup event of the weekend at the Centre de ski Le Relais. Fans were treated to a thrilling display of aerial skiing, with 17 Canadian athletes on the start list.

The Canadian men delivered strong performances in qualifications, with four ultimately advancing to the first final. Émile Nadeau and Pierre-Olivier Côté both put on solid displays in the first final, but the competition was fierce, and unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to push them through to the superfinal.

Alexandre Duchaine executed a standout back full-double full-full, earning an impressive score of 124.34 in the first final, heading into the superfinal in second position. However, he was not able to replicate this performance and finished in fifth place.

Lewis Irving went big in the superfinal with a back double full-full-double full. Despite nearly missing the landing, the difficulty degree of this jump was enough to secure him a second-place finish with a score of 102.50. The gold medal went to China’s Guangpu Qi, whose jump earned a score of 124. Rounding out the podium, Christopher Lillis of the United States claimed bronze with a score of 85.40.

In the women’s event, Charlie Fontaine landed a solid back lay full, earning her a spot as the only Canadian woman in the first final, where she ultimately finished in 12th place. Marion Thénault narrowly missed qualifying for finals, placing 13th, while Alexandra Montminy finished 23rd.

Other Canadian athletes who made up the strong contingent included Anthony Noel, Miha Fontaine, Gabriel Dion, Sarah Faith, Victor Primeau, Elliot Beauregard, Isa-Frédérique Laurin, Elliot Primeau, Alycia Hudon, and Victoria Côté.

With incredible performances and passionate support from fans, the Lac-Beauport World Cup highlighted the vibrancy of freestyle skiing in Canada and the talent within the team. Athletes will have another chance at a hometown podium tomorrow, January 26th, during the second World Cup event.
